Cefigen-200 is a brand name for the anti-biotic Cefixime, the 3rd generation cephalosporin anti-biotics. Cefixime is one of the very few antibiotics that are stable against cephalosporinase and beta-lactamase activity. Cefixime is a beta- lactam antibiotic that works by inhibiting the cell wall synthesis in the bacterial cells. This drug binds to specific penicillin-binding protein (PBPs), which control the trans activation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This binding between the PBPs and beta lactam ring of cefixime prevents the cell wall synthesis, eventually leading to the bacterial cell death.
