Since the 1960s, gas has been supplied from the erstwhile Soviet Union to European countries through a network of pipelines. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian Federation, whose relations with Europe improved considerably, was able to enhance its supply of gas to Europe with new investment pouring in from the West into its energy sector, resulting in the construction of new pipelines.
