Initial Consultation and Assessment
The initial consultation will involve the oral surgeon examining your teeth and taking x-rays to assess your wisdom teeth's position and impact on your other teeth. If impaction or other issues are identified, extraction will likely be recommended.
Procedure Day
On surgery day, the area around the wisdom teeth will be numbed with a local anesthetic so you don't feel pain. You may also receive intravenous sedation to help you relax. Once numbed, the surgeon will open the gum tissue over the impacted tooth and remove bone or tooth structure covering it. The tooth will then be gently extracted. Stitches will close the extraction site.
Recovery Period
Following surgery, you can expect some bleeding and swelling which typically peaks at 2-3 days but should subside within a week. Discomfort is normal but prescription pain medication will be provided. It's important to follow post-op care instructions such as rinsing gently, eating soft foods, avoiding strenuous activity, and stopping bleeding with gauze. Proper self-care ensures smooth healing.
While wisdom tooth removal may seem intimidating, an experienced oral surgeon like Dr. Beena George will ensure your comfort and safety throughout your procedure, answer any questions, and facilitate an uneventful recovery.
