The two most well-known local melodic genres in Musique Cameroun are dance music styles: makossa and bikutsi. Many popular foreign dances have been brought to Cameroon, including the abele from Nigeria more recently, the ashiko from Nigeria in the 1920s, and the maringa from Ghana in the 1850s.
