BellSouth Email Troubleshooting Guide: Login, Password, Sending & Receiving Issues

BellSouth Email Troubleshooting Guide: Login, Password, Sending & Receiving Issues
United States

BellSouth.net email has been used for many years, and eligible existing @bellsouth.net accounts can still be accessed through AT&T Mail. Although BellSouth is no longer a standalone email service, longtime users may continue to rely on their addresses for personal messages, subscriptions, online accounts, and important contacts.

Like any email account, BellSouth email can occasionally experience problems. You may be unable to sign in, find that your password is not accepted, stop receiving new messages, encounter sending errors, or discover that your inbox no longer syncs correctly with Outlook, Apple Mail, iPhone, Android, or another email application.

Most of these problems have relatively straightforward causes. Incorrect credentials, outdated saved passwords, browser data, filters, blocked senders, incorrect IMAP or SMTP settings, and authentication issues can all interfere with email access.

This guide explains how to troubleshoot common BellSouth email login, password, sending, receiving, and synchronization problems.

Is BellSouth Email Still Working?

Eligible existing BellSouth.net email accounts can continue to work through AT&T’s email services. Your email address remains in the @bellsouth.net format, but account access and email support are now handled through AT&T.

Users looking for their old BellSouth mailbox should therefore use the official BellSouth email login through AT&T Mail rather than searching for a separate BellSouth email platform.

If your account suddenly stops working, it does not necessarily mean that your BellSouth email address has been discontinued. Start by checking your login credentials, browser, password, and email settings.

1. Fix BellSouth Email Login Problems

Being unable to sign in is one of the most common BellSouth email problems. You might receive an incorrect-password warning, encounter a temporary error, or repeatedly return to the sign-in page.

Start with a few simple checks:

Make sure your internet connection works.

Enter your complete @bellsouth.net email address.

Type your password manually instead of using autofill.

Make sure Caps Lock is not enabled accidentally.

Try another supported browser.

Clear browser cookies and cached files.

Temporarily disable extensions that could interfere with login.

Close the browser, reopen it, and try again.

If you have multiple passwords saved in your browser, make sure an old password is not being automatically entered.

For more account and browser solutions, review the official AT&T email troubleshooting information.

2. BellSouth Password Not Working

If your BellSouth email address is correct but your password is repeatedly rejected, do not keep guessing.

First, enter the password manually. This helps rule out an outdated password stored by your browser or password manager.

If you recently changed your password, remember that other devices and email applications may still be using the previous one.

If you cannot remember your current password, use AT&T’s official password recovery process. Depending on your account, you may need to provide identifying account information and complete an available verification method before creating a new password.

Follow the current instructions in the official AT&T password reset guide.

After changing your password, test it through webmail first. If you can sign in successfully through a browser, update the stored credentials on your phone, computer, and email applications.

3. Too Many Failed Login Attempts

Repeatedly entering an incorrect password can lead to additional sign-in difficulties or temporary security restrictions.

If you are uncertain about your password, use account recovery rather than trying numerous password combinations.

For temporary sign-in problems, try signing out completely, clearing cookies and cache, closing your browser, and then starting a new session.

You can also try a different browser or private browsing window. If the error appears to be temporary, waiting before trying again may help.

4. BellSouth Email Not Sending Messages

Sometimes you can access your BellSouth inbox normally but cannot send messages.

The first step is to determine whether the problem affects webmail, a third-party email application, or both.

Send a short test email to another address you own. If the message fails, check:

The recipient’s email address for typing errors.

Your Outbox for messages that are stuck.

The size of attachments.

Your internet connection.

Your outgoing SMTP configuration.

Whether outgoing authentication is enabled.

Whether your email application has the correct password.

Large attachments or an incorrectly typed recipient address can prevent successful delivery.

If you can send email through webmail but cannot send from Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or your phone, the BellSouth account itself may be working correctly. In that situation, concentrate on the application’s outgoing server and authentication settings.

5. BellSouth Email Not Receiving Messages

If messages are not appearing in your inbox, first determine whether all incoming mail is affected or only messages from particular senders.

Check your Spam or Junk folder. A legitimate message can occasionally be classified as unwanted email.

Next, review:

Blocked email addresses

Spam settings

Email filters

Other mailbox folders

Forwarding settings, if configured

A filter can automatically move messages away from your Inbox, creating the impression that they were never delivered.

Send a test email to your BellSouth.net address from another account. If the test message arrives normally but email from one sender does not, investigate that sender’s address, your filters, and blocked-sender settings.

6. Verify BellSouth IMAP, SMTP, and POP3 Settings

If BellSouth email works through a web browser but fails in a desktop or mobile email application, incorrect mail-server settings are a likely cause.

AT&T’s current email configuration information includes @bellsouth.net among supported legacy domains.

For IMAP, the settings are:

Incoming server: imap.mail.att.net
Port: 993
Security: SSL
Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.mail.att.net
Port: 465 or 587

For POP3, use:

Incoming server: inbound.att.net
Port: 995
Security: SSL
Outgoing server: outbound.att.net
Port: 465

You can check the latest information on the official AT&T email server settings page.

For most people who access their email on several devices, IMAP is usually more convenient because mailbox activity can remain synchronized across compatible devices.

POP3 is more focused on downloading messages to an email client and may suit users with a different local-email workflow.

7. BellSouth Email Not Working in Outlook or Apple Mail

If BellSouth email stops working in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or another third-party application, first test your account through webmail.

This is an important diagnostic step.

If webmail also fails, investigate your account credentials or password first. If webmail works normally, focus on the third-party application.

Verify the application’s:

Full BellSouth.net username

Authentication credentials

IMAP or POP3 server

SMTP server

Port numbers

SSL settings

Authentication method

Always enter your complete @bellsouth.net email address when the application asks for your email username unless the current AT&T instructions specifically indicate otherwise.

If you recently reset your password, update the application’s stored credentials before changing server settings.

8. Check Your Secure Mail Key

Older email programs may have different authentication requirements from modern applications.

AT&T recommends using email applications that support OAuth. For applications that do not support OAuth, a Secure Mail Key may be required.

A Secure Mail Key is not simply another name for your regular account password. It is a separate credential designed for compatible email applications.

If your email program requires one, follow the official AT&T Secure Mail Key instructions.

Before changing authentication settings, verify that your BellSouth account works through webmail. If webmail works while only one application fails, authentication or configuration within that application becomes a more likely cause.

9. BellSouth Email Not Syncing on iPhone or Android

Mobile synchronization problems frequently occur after a password change.

For example, you may successfully change your BellSouth password online while your iPhone or Android email application continues attempting to connect with the old credentials.

First, verify that your phone has a stable internet connection. Then test the new password through webmail.

If webmail works, check the email account saved on your phone.

Update the stored credentials and try syncing again. If that does not work, verify the incoming and outgoing server settings.

In some situations, carefully removing and adding the email account again can resolve an outdated configuration. Before removing an account, make sure you understand how your mail and locally stored data are configured.
