Clay knife edge bricks are classified as weak acid refractories. Due to the large fluctuation range of chemical composition, different production methods, and differences in firing temperature, the properties of clay bricks change greatly. Ordinary clay bricks are divided into three trademarks: (NZ)-40, (NZ)-35, (NZ)-30 according to the content of AI2O3 in the composition. The refractoriness of clay bricks is above 1600 ℃, but the starting temperature of softening under load is very low, only 1250-1300 ℃, and the distance between the starting temperature and the final temperature (ie 40% deformation temperature) of load softening is very large, this distance is about 200- 250°C. This property of clay bricks is very important, which makes clay bricks suitable for many high-temperature thermal equipment despite their low refractoriness. Clay bricks have good resistance to rapid cooling and rapid heating, and the number of times of water cooling at 850 ° C can reach 10-25 times. Clay bricks can resist the corrosion of weak acid slag, and the resistance to alkaline slag is slightly worse. Increasing the content of AI2O3 can improve the ability of resisting alkaline slag.

Clay bricks are made of clay clinker as aggregate and refractory clay (soft clay or semi-soft clay) as binder to make refractory materials with Al2O content of 30%~ 48%. It is a kind of widely used, the largest yield of refractory products.

The properties of clay products fluctuate in a wide range because of differences in chemical composition and production techniques.
Clay products generally have the following properties:
(1) Chemical and mineral composition. Al2O3 content is 30%~ 48%, SiO2 content is 50%~ 65% and a small amount of alkali metal, alkali earth metal oxide TiO2, Fe2O3, etc. Mineral composition is generally: mullite, quartz and quartz, glass phase.
(2) The refractoriness is generally 1580~1750C, which increases with the increase of Al2O3/SiO2. When the content of low-molten impurities is high, the refractoriness of the product decreases significantly.
(3) The softening temperature under load is about 1250~ 1450C, which has a wide range of variation. The initial deformation temperature is low, with a difference of about 200~ 250C from the 40% deformation temperature.
(4) The linear expansion coefficient is low, and the thermal conductivity is also low.
(5) Good thermal shock resistance, large fluctuation range. 1100C water cooling cycles are generally greater than 10 times. This is due to the low linear expansion coefficient, insignificant transformation effect and plasticity at high temperature.
(6) Resistance to chemical erosion: because it is weak acid, it has strong resistance to acid slag erosion, and weak resistance to alkaline erosion.
