Business Cards Definition:

Business cards are used as a formal introduction among business entities or individuals. Business cards are cards bearing business information about a company or individual. They are shared during formal introductions as a convenience and a memory aid. A business card typically includes the giver's name, company affiliation (usually with a logo) and contact information such as street addresses, telephone number(s), fax number, e-mail addresses and website. It can also include telex, bank account, tax code. Traditionally many cards were simple black text on white stock; today a professional business card will sometimes include one or more aspects of striking visual design.

Construction & Card Stocks:

Business cards are printed on some form of card stock. Card stock also called cover stock or pasteboard, is a paper stock that is thicker and more durable than normal writing or printing paper, but thinner and more flexible than other forms of paperboard. Card stock thickness is often described by pound weight. Pound weight is the weight of 500 sheets of 20 by 26 in (508 by 660 mm) paper. This differs from how text stock is determined, which assumes 500 sheets of 25 by 38 in (635 by 965 mm) paper. Most countries use the term grammage to describe the weight of the paper in grams per square meter. The term card stock is used to describe paper with weights from 50 lb to 110 lb (about 135 to 300 g/m²).

In the U.S., card stock thickness is usually measured in points or mils that gives the thickness of the sheet in thousandths of an inch. For example, a 10 pt. card is 0.010 in (0.254 mm) thick (roughly corresponding to a weight of 250 g/m2); 12 pt. is 0.012 in (0.3048 mm).

Full Color Printing:

The CMYK color model (process color, four color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key black. Though it varies by print house, press operator, press manufacturer and press run, ink is typically applied in the order of the abbreviation. The “K” in CMYK stands for key since in four-color printing cyan, magenta, and yellow printing plates are carefully keyed or aligned with the key of the black key plate.

Some terminology in reference to full color printing:

  • 4/0 - Full Color Front / No Print On Back
  • 4/1 - Full Color Front / One color On reverse
  • 4/4 - Full Color Front / Full Color Back

Glossy Coat:

A business card can also be coated with a UV glossy coat (offset-uv Printing). The coat is applied just like another ink using an additional unit. That being said, UV coats can also be applied as a spot coating - meaning areas can be coated, and other areas can be left uncoated. This creates additional design potential.

Business Card Embossing:

Embossing is the process of creating a three-dimensional image or design in paper and other materials. Business cards Embossing refers to the creation of an impression of some kind of design, decoration, lettering or pattern. In other words, embossing involves raising areas of a card surface above the level of the rest.

Glazing:

Glazing is a polished emboss. This is a popular technique used on dark colored stock.

Blind Embossing:

Blind embossing is a method of creating raised logos or characters on paper without ink. In this process, two metal dies are used; one with raised logo or characters and another with matching but recessed logo or characters. When a sheet of paper is pressed between these dies, blind embossing occurs.

Printed Embossing:

Printing embossing is a method of creating raised logos or characters on paper with ink

Lamination:

Lamination is a Plastic film in various finishes which is applied to the entire printed sheet to create various effects. Lamination is commonly used for Business Cards, Brochures, Leaflets, Postcards and Wallet folders. Lamination offers enhanced image and protection for your documents and helps prevent tearing and creasing. There are two types of laminations i.e. glossy lamination and matt lamination.
